Bowling Green vs. Wisconsin: Game Grades, Analysis for Badgers

The University of Wisconsin will need to rewrite some records this week after the Badgers utterly destroyed the Falcons of Bowling Green thanks to an overly impressive rushing performance by Melvin Gordon and company.

Gordon rushed for a career-high 253 of the Badgers' 644 ground yards. Those 644 are a school and Big Ten modern-era record. Gordon also added five touchdowns—also a career record.

All around, it was a great day for the Badgers. Just how great? Let's take a look at the report card for the Badgers in their win over the Falcons.

Pass Offense

There really wasn't a lot Tanner McEvoy did with the passing offense. With 644 rushing yards, the Badgers didn't really need to use the passing game, but we don't give out high grades for not being needed.

McEvoy was 9-of-16 for 112 yards and threw one touchdown and an interception. Bart Houston was 0-of-2 in late relief.

McEvoy did pick up quite a lot of yards on the ground, some of which were on designed QB runs and some on broken passing plays and scrambles.

Still, the sporadic output from the passing game doesn't deserve anything higher than a B-, and even that might be a bit generous.

Run Offense

This isn't hard.

Gordon: 253 yards, five touchdowns, 19.5 yards per carry on 13 touches.

Three ball-carriers over 100 yards and four over 90.

A school-record 644 rushing yards and eight total rushing touchdowns, tying a school record.

An A+, easily.

Pass Defense

James Knapke never looked comfortable in the pocket for Bowling Green, and his sub-50 percent completion rating is evident of the pressure the Falcons were under all day.

BGSU found room for 178 receiving yards, but the passing game didn't generate a single touchdown, and Knapke's one pick shows us the Wisconsin defense is an oftentimes overlooked yet very solid part of the Badgers' success.

Run Defense

Even if you don't compare BGSU's rushing output to Wisconsin's, it still wasn't good. The fact that the Badgers put up 644 yards makes the Falcons' 93 rushing yards look even more pathetic.

What's worse for the Falcons is the fact that 95 yards were gained on just two plays—one of 60, one of 35. Everything else was either single digits or stopped for a loss.

We wonder what might happen if the Wisconsin running backs faced the Wisconsin run defense.

Special Teams

Rafael Gaglianone was a perfect 2-of-2 on field goals, and he went 8-of-9 on extra points. Drew Meyer averaged 40.5 yards on his two punts. Kenzel Doe averaged over 14 yards on seven punt returns, including a long of 40 yards.

All in all, a very nice day for the Badgers. Still, missing an extra point is just silly, so we have to mark Wisconsin down slightly for that. How about an A- on the day?

Coaching

So often, we see coaching staffs abandon something that's working. Here, we have to give credit to Gary Andersen for recognizing early that Gordon was going to be the big story, and then sticking with him.

The Badgers never tried to force the passing game into the contest. Instead, Andersen and company kept it simple and rode Gordon—and a few other running backs—all the way to a record-breaking victory.

It was a little interesting to see the Badgers throwing the football late in the fourth quarter with a massive lead, but it's hard to criticize any coach after a 68-17 victory. We'll stick with an impressive A for the coaches.
