Ohio State's 2016 recruiting class got a big boost on Sunday when Kareem Felder, a 3-star cornerback and former Virginia Tech pledge, announced his commitment to Urban Meyer and the Buckeyes.
Felder became the 13th member of a group that has shot up the recruiting rankings over the last month. After gaining commitments from four '16 prospects during the week of their spring game—along with the recent addition of the stud defensive back from Baltimore—Ohio State has a firm grasp on the No. 3 ranking.
With the class filling up at a rapid rate, it wouldn't be surprising if the coaching staff became a bit more selective in their targeting process. That may be happening already as the Buckeyes only sent out offers to 2017 prospects last week.
Here's a rundown of Ohio State's recent recruiting activity.
Jake Moretti, 4-Star Offensive Tackle (2017)
While the 2016 class is coming along nicely, Ohio State's 2017 haul has the potential to be significantly better.
That's hard to fathom, but the Buckeyes have already secured commitments from a pair of 5-star prospects and four 4-stars, easily giving them the top ranking for 2017. But that isn't stopping Meyer from building on his momentum, as he offered a trio of elite sophomore prospects last week.
The first went to Jake Moretti, a 4-star lineman out of Arvada, Colorado. The 6'5", 285-pound tackle is rated the No. 70 overall prospect in the country, boasting offers from Cal, Miami, Michigan, Nebraska and UCLA.
According to Neil Devlin of The Denver Post, Moretti's high school coach, Jay Madden, talked about how special that offer was for his star lineman.
“When you get offered by the National Champion, that’s pretty good as a sophomore in high school,” Madden said.
The coach also told Devlin that Moretti plans to visit Ohio State, Nebraska and UCLA this summer, and that his verbal pledge could come sooner rather than later.
"I don’t think he’ll be a guy who waits until he’s a senior," Madden said.
If the Buckeyes can gain Moretti's commitment, they'll be able to pair him with the nation's top 2017 offensive tackle in Josh Myers.
Deon Jones, 4-Star Cornerback (2017)
The Buckeyes already have two incredible cornerbacks committed for 2017 in 5-star Shaun Wade and 4-star Marcus Williamson, but that didn't stop Meyer from offering Deon Jones on Tuesday.
The 4-star cornerback from Washington, D.C., is the No. 90 prospect for 2017 and the No. 6 cornerback. That he's only a sophomore hasn't effected his recruitment at all, as schools such as Auburn, Clemson, Florida State, Miami, Michigan State and Virginia Tech have all thrown their hats in the ring.
The 6'1", 180-pound defensive back already knows how to use his size to his advantage. As a participant at The Opening Regional in D.C. two weeks ago, Jones stood out as one of the elite cornerbacks in attendance, according to Barton Simmons of 247Sports.
Clemson is shaping up as the favorite for Jones, per 247Sports, but it's so early that the Buckeyes have plenty of time to make up some ground.
Robert Beal, 4-Star Defensive End (2017)
Ohio State's final offer of the week went out to Robert Beal, a talented weak-side defensive end out of Norcross, Georgia. The Buckeyes joined an impressive offer list that also includes Alabama, Florida State, Louisville, Miami, Nebraska and South Carolina.
According to Charles Doss of Land-Grant Holy Land, Beal was excited about the Buckeyes offer and wants to make the trip north for a visit this summer. He also revealed that co-defensive coordinator Chris Ash is leading his recruitment.
"I found out from Coach (Chris) Ash," Beal said, via Doss. "All he said was I am a special type of player and they want to offer me a full ride scholarship. I was honored when Coach Ash told me."
Beal is an imposing pass-rusher at 6'4", but he'll need to add some weight, as he currently checks in at 210 pounds. Of course, he is just a sophomore and has plenty of time to add that weight. That's why top programs are already offering, because he has the potential to be a dominant force coming off the edge.
