The Ohio State Buckeyes, searching for their second straight national championship with a high-powered offensive attack, enjoyed an early look at future contributors during the latest weekend of high school football action.
Running back Demario McCall and wide receiver Austin Mack, both members of the top-ranked 2016 Buckeyes recruiting class, enjoyed exceptional efforts in early senior-season matchups. The pair of promising playmakers combined to account for five scores, leading their respective high school teams to victory.
McCall, an in-state standout, led North Ridgeville High School to a 23-13 win over Olmsted Falls High School. The 5'11", 180-pound prospect started strong Friday night and maintained momentum throughout.
He sprinted for a 66-yard score on the team's second play from scrimmage of the evening, according to Joe Noga of the Northeast Ohio Media Group.
The onslaught continued as McCall collected 175 yards in the contest, per Robert Fenbers of the Morning Journal.
The 4-star prospect helped lead his team to the win with a 57-yard touchdown run later in the game. He projects to compete for a premier role in the Buckeyes backfield, potentially filling the paramount position of H-back in Columbus.
Earlier in September, McCall told Bleacher Report he expects to face considerable competition at Ohio State, where head coach Urban Meyer claims three 4-star running back pledges in the 2016 class.
"It's definitely something I think about," he said. "That's a lot of talent coming in at one position. But Ohio State is where I feel like I'm meant to be."
Mack, rated 16th nationally among wide receivers in 247Sports' composite rankings, delivered as a multidimensional weapon for Bishop Luers High School. The 6'2", 205-pound Hoosier approached 100 yards as both a rusher and pass-catcher, per the Journal Gazette.
He gained 93 yards on the ground, rumbling for two touchdowns. Mack added 95 receiving yards and another touchdown on five receptions.
"I'm an all-around wide receiver who commits to the little things," he told Bleacher Report in May. "I'm smart enough to memorize playbooks quickly and execute my assignments, whether I'm blocking downfield or running crisp routes. For a high school player, I'm polished."
Ohio State features one of the most impressive offensive depth charts in America at this stage, but sustained success requires constant roster replenishment. With Mack and McCall committed to the Buckeyes, future endeavors are likely to include a similarly impressive attack.
